Ragi Mudde

Ragi Mudde for pregnant & breastfeeding moms

For pregnant & breastfeeding mothers, Ragi/Naachni ball or Ragi Mudde as it is traditionally called in Karnataka is extremely high in calcium. .

Moms from Karnataka can vouch for this diet that is so yummy and keeps you & the growing baby strong. Most farmers in Karnataka have a huge ragi ball every morning, before they leave for the farms. Their next meal is only at 12-1 pm. It keeps them full and I don’t have to tell you how strong they are even at the age of 60+.

Post my delivery, I experienced a lot of knee pain which was just a calcium deficiency. I chose to eat one Ragi Mudde/ball meal every day for a month during lunch. And all my knee pain magically disappeared never to return till date.

I know those of you who are not familiar with Ragi Mudde may not like it. But try to add Ragi to your diet. You can try Ragi porridges, rotis, dosas, etc. It really helps you & your baby:-)

Method

1.Boil water. Add salt & ghee to the boiling water

2.In a separate bowl, mix 2 tbsp ragi & water to make a lump free slurry

3.Pour this batter to the boiling water. Keep stirring for 2-3 minutes

4.Next, add the remaining ragi flour & boil the mixture for a minute

5.Break the lumps that appear on the surface of the mixture and let the entire mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes

Ensure that the ragi is completely cooked. Add ghee & keep stirring till ragi get a glossy shine.

6.Turn the gas off. Take some ragi in your hand. Start making round balls(when the ragi is still warm)

7.Serve this ragi ball with piping hot sambhar gravy

Btw, What was your favorite pregnancy meal? I would love to know.
