Ragi Rava Paddu | Finger Foods for Kids

Ragi Rava Paddu

Appe, Paniyarams or Paddu in the regional languages that is made with Ragi & Rava or Semolina. They literally look like chocolate balls 😛

Some kids love chewing, love to eat independently so that is when finger foods like this are amazing to be handed over to them. And as you know Ragi is 10x rich in calcium than wheat or rice so its amazing for growing kids.

Ingredients:
-2 tbsp semolina (roasted)
-1/2 cup sprouted ragi flour (You can even use Early Foods Sprouted Ragi Porridge Mix)
-1/2 cup Curd
-1 Medium Sized Onion (chopped)
-8 curry leaves (chopped)
-A small Tomato (chopped)
-1 tsp mustard seeds
-1 tsp vegetables oil/ ghee
-Salt to taste

Method:

1.Take a bowl, mix Semolina and finger millet. Add the yogurt, 1 tsp salt and ½ cup of water and let it sit for 30 minutes

2.Meanwhile, in a frying pan, heat some vegetable oil and add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, add onions, tomato and stir fry over medium heat.Add a pinch of salt and continue frying for half a minute

3.Go back to the batter and add more water if you see that the batter has become very thick. Transfer the onion masala into the batter. Whisk to mix everything properly

4.The batter needs to be of the same consistency as an idli batter. So add water if required. Since there is Semolina, the batter thickens often

5.Place an appe pan on the gas and brush the cavities with some ghee. Take a spoon and pour the cavities with the batter when the pan is hot

6.Lower the heat and cover the appe pan till you see the colour changing to brown (Finger millet flour makes it brown)

7.It takes about 5-7 minutes, depending on the thickness of the pan and the heat from the gas. Turn the appe/paddu to cook the other side

8.Once you see a beautiful brown colour on the other side as well, take them out

9.Serve the finger millet paniyarams or paddu hot with your child’s favorite chutney or sambhar
